Calling canine completers – can anyone beat Joe the Cocker?

Joe the Cocker is a remarkable hound – with 2000 miles under his collar and the medal to prove it. Did your dog love the challenge as much or even more? Let us know!

Three-year-old cocker spaniel Joe has accompanied 64-year-old human Malcolm Davies every step of the way in #walk1000miles 2020, smashing the target – twice!

The pair from Runcorn in Cheshire are lucky enough to have the Lakes and the Peak District as their playground. But one of the highlights of the year was walking the Great Glen Way says Malmcolm: “The people we met, their kindness and encouragement, the scenery – it was all amazing even if the weather was a challenge. Completing it with Joe has been my walking highlight this year.”

The challenge of walking 1000 miles proved quite the stimulus for the pair – who did the double in late September. Says Malcolm: “Having a target has helped so much with motivation. Seeing the miles rack up and new milestones achieved and celebrated helps me to get off the couch each day. It helps my fitness, mental wellbeing and my weight. I have a tendency to eat fattening food. I can get away with it by getting the miles in – and Joe loves it.“

“The Facebook group is inspirational and motivational. The overwhelming feedback, especially about Joe, is heartwarming. My advice to anyone with a dog is get a good pair of hiking shoes or boots and take on the challenge. You will feel alive!”

We know dogs are a big part of the challenge for lots of people and we’d like to acknowledge that in some way. So if you’ve got a 1000-mile dog who deserves our attention, please let us know in this Facebook post, telling us:
